Moment Complete Guide

Part 1: The device

Moment measures the surface temperature of a drink from above, without touching it, and shows the flavor notes written for that temperature as the cup cools. That is Taste by Temperature: you know when to take the next sip and what to look for in it. Follow a profile someone else wrote, a roaster, a barista or a friend, and taste the cup stage by stage with their notes in front of you. Or write your own, then taste the same coffee again another day and see whether you find the same thing. This half of the guide covers the hardware: the parts, putting it together, the two modes on the device, and how to get an accurate reading.

Know your Moment

Moment is a stand about a foot tall. The cup goes on the base platform, and the head sits above it with the screen facing you and the infrared sensor pointing down at the cup.

Moment from the front and from the back.
Moment from the front and from the back.

Touchscreen - the 2.0-inch AMOLED screen on the front of the head. It shows the temperature, the stage the cup is in and that stage’s flavor notes, plus every menu and setting.

Power button - the touch button on top of the head. Hold it to power on, power off or restart.

Infrared sensor - the window on the underside of the head. It measures the surface of the drink without touching it, so nothing goes into the cup. It warms up over a hot drink, so keep your fingers off it.

USB charging port - on the back of the head. Moment works while it charges.

Stand - the arm between the head and the base. It comes off for packing.

Base platform - where the cup goes. Moment fits cups under 15 cm tall and more than 3 cm across.

Put it together

Moment ships in one of two packaging layouts. They differ only in how the parts are packed and the assembly order. If your box does not match the photos below, follow the tutorial video from the QR code card.

Seat the head
1. Seat the head
Lift out the top foam layer, take out the base and the manual sleeve, then put the foam back. Turn the head over and set it into the slot in the foam, which holds it still while you work.
Fix the stand to the head
2. Fix the stand to the head
The screws and screwdriver are in a bag inside the manual sleeve. Use one screw to fix the stand to the head.
Fix the stand to the base
3. Fix the stand to the base
Use two more screws to fix the stand to the base. Earlier units use only these two screws. Keep the leftover screws as spares.
Check the pad
4. Check the pad
Make sure the silicone anti-slip pad is in place on the base. Moment is ready.

Double tap anywhere on the screen to like the stage you are drinking in. The heart counter in the corner counts the likes. Hold anywhere on the screen to rate the coffee itself, on five faces from dislike to like, then tap Done. Likes and ratings sync to CoffeeOS, where the person who wrote the profile sees which stages people liked and how they rated the cup.

Display settings: Settings > Shop configuration turns the temperature, the flavor notes and the rating on or off in Store mode. All three are on from the factory.

Cupping mode

Use Cupping mode so everyone at the table tastes at the same temperatures and times.

1. Open Cupping
Tap Cupping on Select Mode.

2. Set your alerts
Alerts are on from the factory; choose the points. Add up to five temperature points and five time points. Set 60 °C, for example, and Moment sounds when the cup reaches 60 °C. Hold a point to delete it.

3. Cup
Tap Confirm to start. Tap the screen to mark a temperature; hold anywhere to remove a mark. Swipe down from the top edge to reach the settings again, and tap Confirm to return.

Cupping records are saved to CoffeeOS. If Moment is not connected during the cupping, it keeps the records and syncs them when the connection comes back. Cupping mode is still being developed, so new features arrive with firmware updates.

For a cupping table: focus on 70, 55 and 35 °C, use the same flavor wheel terms, and keep the same standard across everyone cupping.

Get an accurate reading

Center the cup. The sensor aims at the middle of the base platform, so set the cup there.

Keep the view clear. A lid, a hand or a spoon between the sensor and the drink changes the reading.

Choose the spot. A stable, level surface, between 5 and 45 °C, away from sinks and other damp places.

Moment reads 0 to 100 °C to ±1 °C, and filters out steam rising from a hot drink.

Keep it clean

Wipe the body and the sensor window with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Never use alcohol, acetone or other harsh cleaners, and never put Moment in water: it is not waterproof. Store it somewhere dry and cool, out of direct sun. If it will sit unused for more than 3 months, charge it fully before storing and recharge it every 3 months.

When something looks wrong

What you see What to do

Part 2: Moment in CoffeeOS

CoffeeOS is where profiles are written and where the likes and ratings come back. You build a coffee’s stages and notes in the Flavor Thermometer, sync them to one Moment or several, and read what drinkers thought of each stage afterward. CoffeeOS is free, and it creates your account the first time you open it.

Connect Moment

Scan the QR code card from the box, or download CoffeeOS from the App Store or Google Play.

1. Turn on Bluetooth
On your phone, turn on Bluetooth and location and allow every permission CoffeeOS asks for. If CoffeeOS cannot see Moment, turn on Bluetooth on Moment too: Settings > Device Settings > Connection Settings.

2. Connect
Power Moment on and open the Tools tab in CoffeeOS. A connection prompt appears. If you have several Moments, check the name in the bottom left corner of each screen, select the matching one, and tap Connect.

The name to look for in CoffeeOS is in the bottom left corner.

Moment then appears in the device row on the Tools tab, and the Flavor Thermometer, the Tool that runs Moment, appears with the other Tools. You can also connect with Scan in the Tools tab menu: scan the QR code on Moment under Settings > About.

Cupping, Shop and Map across the top, your coffees and shops below.

Shop is where you build and sync coffees. All coffee list holds every coffee you have written. Shop list holds your shops: each shop is a name, an address and a logo, and the coffees you put in it. The shop name is what Moment shows above its list of coffees, so at home your shop can simply be your own name. Cupping and Map are covered further down.

Add a shop

Create the shop
1. Create the shop
In the Shop tab, tap Add. Enter the shop name and address, add a logo photo, and tap Save.
Open it
2. Open it
Tap the shop to see its coffees. Import, Select and Add sit along the bottom.

If several cafés or locations share the same Moment, add a shop for each.

Write a coffee’s profile

A profile is a coffee’s name and description and up to five stages. Each stage has a name, a temperature range, one primary note and as many secondary notes as you want.

Start with what you already know

Open a shop and tap Add. Intelligent input at the top turns a description into a draft profile you can edit.

Text Recognition
1. Text Recognition
Type or paste anything you have: a cupping note, the roaster’s description, what you tasted. Tap Text Recognition.
Image Recognition
2. Image Recognition
Or tap Image Recognition and take a photo of the bag, or choose one from your album.
Check the basics
3. Check the basics
Name and Description are filled in from what CoffeeOS recognized. Edit them, or type them yourself, then tap Next.

Build or edit the stages

The top of the screen previews each stage as it will look on Moment, and updates as you type.

Name the stage and set its range
1. Name the stage and set its range
Enter a Stage Name, such as Hot. It appears at the top of the Moment screen during that stage. Then tap Temperature range and choose where the stage starts and ends, for example 85 to 62 °C.
Add the notes
2. Add the notes
Under Flavor Notes, enter the primary note: type the first letter to see matching flavors and pick one, or type your own and press Enter. Only one primary note per stage. Then add secondary notes the same way.
Add the next stage
3. Add the next stage
Tap Add Stage. It starts where the last one ended, so set only its lower end. To remove a stage, tap the X on its preview. Tap Finish when you are done.

Back in the shop, swipe across a coffee to copy it or delete it. Deleting a shop moves its coffees to All coffee list, so nothing is lost. Coffees can be moved from one shop to another, or exported as a spreadsheet to import into another shop.

Import from a spreadsheet

Get the template
1. Get the template
Open the shop, tap Import, and download the template.
Fill it and upload
2. Fill it and upload
Fill in the template on a computer. Back in CoffeeOS, upload the file and tap Import. Every coffee in the file appears in the shop.

Sync coffees to Moment

Moment needs to be on, connected by Bluetooth, and off the Temp Mode screen.

Choose the coffees
1. Choose the coffees
In the shop, tap Select, check the coffees you want on Moment, and tap Sync.
Choose the Moments
2. Choose the Moments
Online lists the Moments in range, with their battery level. Check each one marked Syncable and tap Sync. Up to five sync at once; the rest wait their turn.
Choose how to sync
3. Choose how to sync
Sync Changes Only keeps what is already on Moment and adds the coffees you selected. Replace Existing Data clears Moment and loads only the selected coffees. Either way, nothing is deleted from CoffeeOS. Check Remember this choice to skip this step next time; you can change it later in Device Center.
Done
4. Done
When the bar reaches Success, tap Close. Moment now shows the shop name and its coffees.

Each Moment holds up to 200 coffees. Once they are synced, Moment shows them without a connection.

See what people liked

Tap a coffee in the shop to open its details. Edit at the bottom changes the profile; sync again to update Moment.

Community Ratings: the average, and how many people gave each rating.

Every stage with its range, its notes and the number of likes it received.

From the likes you see which stage of a coffee people enjoyed most; from the ratings, what they thought of the whole cup. In a café, read them to see whether drinkers agree with your notes, and change the profile, the recipe or how you serve the coffee.

Share a profile

Share a coffee the same way you share any record in CoffeeOS, as a link or a QR code. The person you send it to saves it in their own CoffeeOS and syncs it to their own Moment. A roaster can print the QR code on the bag, so whoever brews the coffee at home tastes it with the roaster’s notes.

Cupping and the Moment Map

Cupping: the Cupping tab in the Flavor Thermometer is where cupping data is entered, and a cupping can be carried over into a coffee for Store mode. It is still being developed, along with Cupping mode on the device.

Map: the Moment Map shows cafés and roasters that serve their coffee with Moment. If you do, apply to be on the map so people looking for Taste by Temperature can find you.

Update the firmware

New firmware adds features and fixes problems, so install it when CoffeeOS offers it. Moment has to be connected first.

Open the update
1. Open the update
Tap Upgrade when CoffeeOS shows that new firmware is available. Or go to Me > Device Center, tap Moment, then Firmware Upgrade.
Choose Wi-Fi or Bluetooth
2. Choose Wi-Fi or Bluetooth
The Upgrade Log lists what is new. Choose Wi-Fi or Bluetooth under Upgrade Method, then tap Update.
Wait for the check
3. Wait for the check
Over Wi-Fi, CoffeeOS checks the connection from Moment to your network and the internet first. Tap Confirm when every step shows a check, and leave Moment on until the update finishes.

Taste by Temperature, wherever you drink

At the bar: write a profile for every coffee on the menu, sync it to every Moment, and send Moment to the table with the drink. Train staff on the notes so they can talk guests through them, and refine each profile as the likes and ratings come in.

At home: follow the profile a roaster or a friend wrote and see whether you find the same notes at the same temperatures. Or write your own the first time you brew a coffee, then brew it again another day and check whether you taste it the same way.

At a cupping: with Cupping mode, everyone at the table tastes at the same temperatures, so every cup is judged on equal terms.
